How to Deal With High Gas Prices
With the current state of economy, the climate can only be described as scary. Gas prices are skyrocketing, and compounded with other factors, that is having a massively detrimental effect on the everyday person's life and wallet. We continue to use more oil, and because of that, rising oil prices effect everything else. Americans are not going to stop driving, so they cut back on other more disposable things. We go out to eat less, buy less at the stores, etc. So, is there a solution? Yes, but it does require a change, and that is not desirable for many consumers. One way you can help yourself and the economy is to change your vehicle. The new Smart Car is becoming a very popular way to help yourself at the pump. And the constantly evolving hybrid vehicle technology makes hybrid cars much more attractive than in the past. The Smart Car is a concept developed in Europe. At the time, the idea was to create a vehicle that could navigate the narrow streets commonly found in European cities. The Smart Car is a "tiny" vehicle that is now becoming a great solution to an American problem, gas consumption. Because the Smart Car is so small, it only requires a small 4 cylinder engine with low horsepower. While that turns off many drivers, it produces the same performance as many standard vehicles. You can go just as far, and just as fast, but with significantly less fuel. The other benefit is a drastically lower price tag than most cars available today. Another viable solution is a hybrid vehicle. The gas-electric hybrid motor has been significantly developed over the past five years. What was once a lower performance and expensive alternative is now almost identical to a standard motor and is available in many popular vehicle models. The basic premise of a hybrid engine is that it only used gasoline when needed, usually under acceleration. When gasoline is not required (low speeds and cruising), the motor switches to electric. When under gas power, the engine recharges the battery, and unlike an electric vehicle, if the battery charge dies, the gas motor can take over to get you where you need to be. This technology is now affordable (it pays for itself within 2 years), and the performance matches it's standard engine cousins. There are even many models of SUVs available with hybrid technology, so we don't have to give up out big cars or storage space. While these solutions are not viable for some people, they can make a huge difference not only on an individual's wallet, but also on our economy. |
