Landscaping tips
Here is a tip I learned the hard way while landscaping my back yard. Where I live, there is very bad soil (I refer to it as potting clay) which makes it very difficult to have healthy plants and trees in your yard. On my first attempt, I planted my trees normally (i.e. at the same grade as the lawn) and used no soil additives. The trees didin't even last a season, they basically drowned because the soil did not drain. So, the second time around (this was an expensive lesson) I planted new trees, but to mitigate the effect of the horrible soil I did things a little differently. First off, I dug the holes only about 2/3 the depth of the root ball. The allowed me to build up the dirt around the roots to create a small hill or swale around the tree. Because the soil did not naturally drain water, the swale prevented any water from pooling around the roots and drowning the trees again. I also dug the holes about twice as wide as the roots and added good soil around the root ball to allow them to grow and expand without having to push through the hard clay. Additionally, I added Miracle grow fertilizer to the soil and clay buster to soften the surrounding soil. This worked like a charm, and with the drip lines I added for watering, I was able to control the amount of watering on the trees so I could prevent them from drowning again. It has now been 2 seasons since I fixed the problem, and I am enjoying big beutiful healthy trees. |
